Celebrating Black History Month
February 16, 2022
Every February, Black History Month honours the legacy of Black Canadians and celebrates their communities and achievements. As we continue on our path of listening and learning, Harper Grey’s Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee has organized educational opportunities open to all firm members during Black History Month.
The first event, scheduled for February 11, 2022, was a virtual screening of the document “Secret Vancouver: Return to Hogan’s Alley” followed by a Q&A with guest speaker, Wayde Compton.
The second event, to be held on February 23, 2022, will be an open discussion led by keynote speaker, Dr. June Francis, an advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion on “Racial Justice in the Practice of Law – Addressing the Racial Equity Gap”.
The DIB Committee also shared information and recommendations for films, books and podcasts on topics regarding notable Black Canadians, historic Black Canadian Communities and other resources related to Black heritage in our country.
Harper Grey is committed to promoting the participation of Black Canadians in the legal community. In 2021, our firm sponsored the UBC Peter A. Allard School of Law’s LSAT Prep Course which offered a complimentary two month LSAT preparation course for self-identifying Black and Indigenous applicants. A total of 34 students participated and, of that number, 15 self-identified as Black and 19 self-identified as Indigenous.
